Hereford Guided Walks

History & Culture, Family Friendly

Welcome to Hereford

Hereford is a historic Cathedral City with a fascinating past and a busy present. Its modern origins lay in the 7th century, and its strategic site on the Wye, in the much-disputed borderland between England and Wales, made it as important to the Saxons as to the Normans and their successors.

Daily Walks - Start from the Cathedral
We resumed daily walks on Friday, March 29th, 2024. They will continue through Thursday, October 31st, 2024. However, to avoid any disappointment, we recommend that you check our website before your visit to confirm that Daily Walks are taking place.

Each walk will be led by a trained volunteer member of the Guild of Guides and will last approximately one and a half hours. The start time is 11.30 am, except on Sundays at 2.30 pm. The walks will commence outside the North Porch (Main Entrance) of the Cathedral.

You will need to purchase a ticket from the Cathedral shop before joining the walk (but on Sundays, it is from the Guide, not the shop. It is cash only, as the Guide cannot accept card payments.) The charge is £6 per adult and £1 for accompanied children aged 6 - 12.

Please note that we can only allow Assistance Dogs on our walks.

ease join us for a tour of Hereford's interesting and historic buildings and other structures and a discussion of the City's history, from Saxon times to the Civil War, its role in it, and its famous people.

The Hereford Cathedral website provides information about the Cathedral (the Cathedral Church of St. Mary the Virgin and St. Ethelbert the King), including daily Cathedral Tours.

The City played a leading part in the events before and after the Norman Conquest, through the turbulent Middle Ages, and during the Civil War. It developed as a quiet market town and Cathedral City. Today, it is vigorous and thriving, home to 53,000 people and a focal point of a rich farming area.

Booked Walks - Available throughout the year

Booked Walks can take place throughout the year. For organisations and groups planning bookings in 2024, don't hesitate to email us at bookings@herefordguidedwalks.org.uk  or call 07947 924494 to discuss your requirements. Alternatively, you can place your Booking online using the "Book Now" button on your selected walk.

Please note that the minimum number of walkers we will consider for a Booked Walk is 4 adults, and all walks are subject to the availability of suitable Guides for the subject matter and the size of your group.

Wheelchair users are welcome. Members of the Guild have devised a route that aims to minimise discomfort by using the smoothest surfaces and avoiding steep slopes, bumps, narrow pavements, and narrow, busy thoroughfares. Please see our FAQs section on our website for more information.

Walks can be arranged at any time of the year, and the starting and finishing points can be planned to suit the party's convenience.

Specially themed walks can also be arranged:

  • Hauntings and Horrors
  • Elgar in Hereford
  • Alfred Watkins - Hereford man of many parts
  • Historical City Walk
  • Building Hereford Through the Ages - architecture in the historic city centre
  • Women in Hereford

Booked Talks - Available throughout the year

We offer Booked Talks for groups and organisations that want a guided tour brought to your venue. You can make a booking for any date throughout the year. We offer fully illustrated slideshows to suit your needs, including Historical Hereford, Hauntings and Horrors, Elgar in Hereford and Famous People from Hereford.

Our latest offerings are:

  • The Kembles of Hereford: birthplace of a theatrical dynasty
  • Historical City Talk
  • Alfred Watkins - Hereford man of many parts
  • Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians
  • Women in Hereford
  • A Herefordshire Aircraft Crash and The Death of Stereo
  • Agriculture & Industry

Please see below for more information about these themed walks.

A few days' notice is usually required, and we typically allocate one Guide per ten people. To enquire or to make your BookingBooking, please contact our Booking Secretary.

Charges - £6 per person. The charge for parties of schoolchildren is £1 per child and £6 for accompanying adults. Please note that we can only allow assistance dogs on our walks.

Coach parties can unload near the west front of the Cathedral, where the group can be met. The coach must leave immediately after unloading - for example to the car park at Merton Meadow.

The Guild has been updating its offer to schools to include a range of topics that could be particularly relevant to a study of local history. The material could be adapted to suit the needs of any year group at your school.
